6 things you need to know before your first surf session

After playing in waves so many times in my life, sometimes I forget to give my beginner friends advice on how to safely learn surfing.

The legendary surfer Kiva Rivers is a reference as a surfing teacher. Celebrities like Clint Eastwood and Vanessa Hudgens had been taking classes with him on Maui !

Here you can check out the details of the 6 things you need to know before your next surfing holiday :

  1. Size of the board
  2. What to wear in the water
  3. Size of the waves
  4. Using the Channel
  5. Don’t watch your feet
  6. Listen to lifeguards

I would just add 2 things:

  • Kiva recommends a 9-11ft board for beginners. I agree with him, but for young kids (under 13 years old) that improve fast, a wide and thick shortboard can be a good option !
  • About « what to wear in the water », my advice would be to wear booties for shallow places, and it also help to have your feet ‘stuck’ on the board !
